My name is Chris Talley, and I love to play music! I own The Bluegrass Shack in New Athens, IL. I have 60 private students and another 100 or so group students. You'll see videos of me and my students, jam sessions here at The Bluegrass Shack, instructional videos, and occasionally just songs I like. I play over 25 instruments, but teach mainly banjo, fiddle & guitar. Although I read music and have been classically trained on flute, you're going to see mostly bluegrass here!

Unique “Kalimba” Fiddle!

This fiddle was in my stash of fiddles to repair and be sold, and I found out the inside had wooden bars made from walnut imbedded into the bass bar. I took the top off to see this. There was a spider egg sac and a dirt dobbers nest that I had to remove from one section of the bars. I decided to go ahead and glue the top back on so I could hear what it sounded like. I have that same guitar, but I tune it like a Plectrum Banjo. D G B D. Sounds great! I play 5 string, and this inexpensive guitar sounds great!

The Recording King tenor guitar that I saw on their website and that a friend of mine owns is a 000 size guitar. We tried putting it in my Martin 000JR-10 gig bag, and the tenor was two big for that bag.
Standard tenor tuning is C3G3D4A4. Chord shapes are comparable to a tenor banjo. That what makes the tenor guitar sound out and cut through a mix with other stringed instruments.
